Just watched the first "The Fast and the Furious" movie all the way through for the first time

 I could not believe the subtext/chemistry between Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian (Paul Walker, RIP). And I couldn't believe it was unintentional. Holy geez, I don't think Hot Fuzz was as slashy. 

I loved Brian, Dom, Dom/Brian, Mia, and the whole Toretto gang. I was so sad when Jesse died. Johnny Tran was in the movie surprisingly little; his plot was more like a subplot and an excuse to have more interaction between Brian and Dom rather than a central aspect.

And I loved those two together. Brian rescuing Dom from the cops, Dom inviting Brian into his house, garage, and his life, Dom taking up for Brian in from of his gang, Brian throwing away his career for Dom . . . LOVED IT. And now I'm already planning to see The Fate of the Furious.

HA I too only recently watched the movie for the first time and I had the exact same reaction. The plot/logical progression had a lot of holes for me but I still enjoyed watching the movie overall.

It's one of those movies that falls apart the moment you think about it, but I can forgive a lot of its flaws just because it's so much fun. Why did Dom instantly trust Brian? Because of LOVE. Love at first sight, I tell you.

So true. In this case, I couldn't if the writers were just like, "Oh, they'll both have girlfriends, so it won't seem like a romance, even if we write it like that," or if it was just a holdover from the 90's "Manly guys doing manly things," with no consideration there could ever be subtext.

Right? In terms of the story, it really felt like it was Dom who was Brian's love interest.

for nothing summer movie, TF&tF has sure built up a devoted fanbase, and spawned a very successful movie franchise. you truly don't need slash goggles to see the sexual tension between the guys

For serious. I couldn't even pick the slashiest moment. Mia saying to Brian, "He owns you now," referring to Dom? Brian insisting that Dom couldn't be responsible for the hijackings? Dom telling Brian, while barely knowing him, about his tragic past? It's so hard to choose! I couldn't believe how easily the Mia/Brian subplot could have been cut and just re-edited to be Dom/Brian.

Just for a counter-point to most commentary on the series: I am a complete fan of 2F2F, I love it to stupid degrees. So I sort of have a really hard time relating to the rest of the series, because Brian and Rome. (This is not to say that I am not a huge, huge, huge Dom/Brian shipper because holy hell am I ever, but I love the tangled disaster of Rome and Brian's past.)

I will not lie: my favorite types of fics are the ones where Rome and Dom meet and immediately start fighting over Brian as best friend and love interest.

Because I am poly as the day is long, I'm happiest when they eventually sort things out. But the awkward mess in the middle where Rome's issues and Dom's issues and Brian's 'Goddamnit you two idiots I fucking love you both' all explode at each other is just wonderful.

TBH, the promise of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham - whose characters you haven't met yet - having a fight scene that makes use of the prison set is one of the things I am hanging onto to get me through this winter.

I remember the first time I saw Fast & the Furious and went "good grief, it's literally just Point Break on wheels". Man, was I missing the point.

(I rejoined the series around F&F5 and am thoroughly loving it. 5 & 6 are in my top 5 Always Rewatch comfort movies. :))

LOL, was there a point besides that? ;D I don't see how this movie could have been written without someone picking up on the subtext. I think they were going for that Brian and Dom just developed a deep respect for each other, but Lord did they seem interested in each other.

OMG, I love the Fast & Furious films so much. You have such a pile of treats in store. The 2nd & 3rd films aren't as good, but then it gets awesome, and all kinds of fun. The laws of physics in that 'verse are not our laws, for sure.

I also LOL at the physics. I caught a little bit of the second movie--the opening race where the one just plows through a partially constructed house and emerges completely fine. Because that's totally a thing.

I've heard the second movie is a downgrade from the first, but I love it for introducing Rome and setting up so many fanfic scenarios where Dom and Rome get really possessive of Brian and fight over him as their boyfriend and best friend.

That series is crack. I never took it seriously until about the 4th or 5th sequel when I noticed that the production value started improving and the car chases and fighting became really top-notch. Cast additions from the past few years have been great.

From what I've seen of the series so far, you're dead on target with your description of the series, but God love 'em for it. Walker and Diesel work so well together . . . in so many ways.

Responding late, but it's so true - the plot makes 1000% more sense if you assume that Brian is in love with Dom.

Midnight Screenings/The Cinema Snob once described "The Fast and the Furious" as "Point Break" with race cars. I think it was an accurate description. ;)
